Every generation, a new technology changes everything。

Imagine, in the 20th century, electricity came to a remote town in America。

Prior to the arrival of power lines, daily life was constrained by physical constraints: water picking, hand-washing and the preservation of food with ice, most activities could not continue after sunset. Electricity does not change every household overnight, and the extent to which many people benefit from it is uneven。

But as electricity spreads, ordinary life changes. The night's lights have been extended by one day; electric pumps, household appliances and refrigerators have reduced many heavy daily tasks; and radios have brought news, music and emotional connections hundreds of miles away into homes and public places。

The original purpose of electricity is to facilitate people ' s lives, but its far-reaching effects stem from the creation of new possibilities as more and more people are able to use it. Over time, new possibilities have emerged — machines and computers have greatly accelerated progress in medicine, engineering and many fields。

By the end of the twentieth century, human life expectancy had increased by more than 20 years, and inflation-adjusted median income had roughly tripled。

These achievements have largely benefited from improvements in health, sanitation and living standards, many of which have been driven or accelerated by widespread access to electricity and related technological advances。

AI IS REPRODUCING THIS PHENOMENON。AI IS ABOUT TO HAVE EXTRAORDINARY CAPABILITIES. BUT THE FOCUS IS NOT ON TECHNOLOGY ITSELF, BUT ON WHAT PEOPLE CAN DO WITH IT。

It can help people understand a medical bill, learn a new skill, start a small business, care for older parents, understand a law or financial decision, translate an idea into reality, and even promote a scientific discovery。

The new wonders of nightlight may soon fade away, but people decide what to do with light, but not。AND BECAUSE TECHNOLOGY HAS ALWAYS BEEN A RELIABLE WAY TO PROMOTE PROSPERITY, WE BELIEVE THAT AI SHOULD BE OPEN TO ALL, SO THAT EVERYONE CAN USE IT ANYWHERE AND IN ANY WAY THEY WANT。

But such a future will not happen naturally。

Transformative technologies can be centralized or decentralized; they can make the lives of a few more accessible and open up opportunities for more people. Our philosophy is based on one conviction:AI SHOULD SERVE PEOPLE — HELPING PEOPLE TO PURSUE THEIR GOALS, EMPOWERING THEM AND EXTENDING THE BENEFITS OF THIS TECHNOLOGY AS WIDELY AS POSSIBLE。

OUR FIRST COMMITMENT IS TO BUILD AI FOR THE SERVICE OF HUMANITY。This means that we want to be broadly empowered, rather than concentrating power on a few companies, Governments or individuals。

We believe that a more secure future is one in which power is widely distributed, allowing more people in the world to participate in building a resilient ecosystem。

WE ARE OPTIMISTIC ABOUT AI BECAUSE WE BELIEVE IT CAN EXPAND HUMAN CAPABILITIES AND WELL-BEING。

But we are equally sober about risks. A strong system must be safe, consistent with human intentions and subject to human supervision and control. OpenAI's mission is to ensure that AGI benefits all of humanity. This means that the system that we want to build is to help people do more of what they choose, not to replace humanity。

To automate everything completely is not the future we want。

IT WILL BE DESPERATE AND DANGEROUS. AI SHOULD HELP PEOPLE TO PERFECT THEMSELVES, NOT REPLACE HUMANITY. WITH THE GROWING CAPACITY OF AI, THE ROLE OF HUMAN BEINGS WILL BECOME EVEN MORE IMPORTANT: TAKING DIRECTION, WEIGHING TRADE-OFFS, APPLYING JUDGEMENT AND BRINGING VALUES, TASTES, CARE AND RESPONSIBILITY TO WORK。

In the future, a core mission of humanity will be to determine what is worth doing。

WE BELIEVE THAT IN THE COMING YEARS, AI WILL BE THE KEY FACTOR IN DETERMINING THE PACE OF PROGRESS。

THIS IS CRUCIAL, BECAUSE ALIGNMENT ITSELF IS A PROFOUND RESEARCH CHALLENGE. IN ORDER TO MAKE RAPID AND DEEP PROGRESS, OUR RESEARCHERS WILL NEED TO USE THE AI SYSTEM TO TEST IDEAS, DETECT ERRORS, EXPLORE ALTERNATIVES AND INTERACT WITH US。

I don't knowFaster technological advances make human judgement and public collaboration more important than less importantI don't know. The future should be shaped by human beings, institutions and society, not just by those companies that built the most powerful systems。

AS THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE FRONT LINE AI CONTINUES, WE ANTICIPATE THAT COORDINATION AT THE NATIONAL AND GLOBAL LEVELS WILL BECOME MORE IMPORTANT。

WE HAVE LONG BEEN CONVINCED THAT AN INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATION SHOULD EVENTUALLY BE ESTABLISHED TO COORDINATE THE MAIN AI FORCES AND TO WORK TOGETHER TO REDUCE CATASTROPHIC RISKS。

Cooperation and common security as standards, and also as important elements of the way forward - Especially because of the problems posed by commercial competition and national competition。

One of the goals of such organizations should be to enable the world to take concerted action, including slowing the development of frontier areas where necessary, so that social resilience, security and alignment can keep pace with technological advances。

At present, OpenAI has three core objectives:

IN ORDER TO MAKE SUFFICIENT PROGRESS IN THE ALIGNMENT STUDY, WE BELIEVE THAT THERE IS A NEED FOR AI TO COME AND COME WITH US. THIS WILL HELP US NAVIGATE THE TRANSITION TO THE "POST-AGI WORLD" SO THAT WE CAN COLLECTIVELY DETERMINE THE PATH TO THE FUTURE。

Accelerating economic development— By accelerating scientific progress, increasing productivity and boosting economic growth while working to ensure that results are widely shared。

It should be a future in which many people, many businesses, communities and nations can build, benefit and hold power。We believe that this change belongs to all。

IF WE DO IT RIGHT, AI CAN BE THE CORNERSTONE FOR INCREASING MASS PRODUCTIVITY, CREATIVITY, SCIENTIFIC PROGRESS AND ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITIES, AND WE WILL FULFIL OUR MISSION: TO ENSURE THAT AGI BENEFITS ALL HUMANITY。
